May 11, 1968

Coincident with the extension of the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY to Warden, service begins on a new route on Victoria Park Avenue, running north from Victoria Park station and replacing a significant portion of the 23 DAWES bus route.

Buses leave Victoria Park station and run via west on Denton and north on Victoria Park to loop at Old Sheppard Avenue. Buses here loop counterclockwise via an off-street loop provided at the northwest corner. Service operates seven days a week, eighteen hours a day.

Additional rush hour service is provided to Ellesmere Road, with buses looping at the north end via west and north and Combermere, east on Parkwoods Village Drive, and south on Victoria Park to route.

Route operates entirely in Zone 2, using the normal pay enter/free leave system, with transfer privileges to all connecting Zone 2 routes. Passenger pay Zone 1 fares upon entering the subway at Victoria Park.

Coincident with the launch of the 85C SHEPPARD EAST branch through the Consumers industrial area, 24A rush hour service uses a revised looping via Yorkland. No change in destination signs.

April 18, 1977

With the off-street loop at Finch now unavailable for TTC use, 24 “Finch” buses now loop on-street via Finch, Pharmacy, Chester Le and Morecambe. 24B Steeles loop enlarged to operate via Steeles, Pharmacy and McNicoll. No change to destination signs.

October 15, 1979

Service established on a new rush hour branch operating from Victoria Park station, north of Steeles, looping via Alden to Warden Avenue. Service north of Steeles is operated under contract to the Town of Markham.

At the request of the Town of Markham, service north of Steeles revised. A new 24C “14th Avenue” rush hour branch established, replacing “Esna Park” service. Buses operate from Victoria Park station via Victoria Park, looping via Steelcase, John, Woodbine, Rivera, Rodck, 14th Avenue, Hood, Denison, Esna Park and Steelcase to Victoria Park. Service operates every thirty minutes.

In addition a new 24D “Alden” branch replaces the old “Warden via Alden” branch. Buses operate from Victoria Park station via Victoria Park, looping via Denison, Hood, Alden, Esna Park, John and Steelcase. Service operated every thirty minutes.

Service retained on the 24E “Highway 7” branch, also operating every thirty minutes.

September 3, 1993

Last day of operation for the 24D “Alden” rush hour service. Branch discontinued north of Steeles at the request of the Town of Markham.

March 31, 1996

On Sundays, buses on the 24B “Steeles” branch avoid the off-street loop at the corner of Steeles and Victoria Park, looping instead via east on Steeles, south on Pharmacy and west on Passmore, providing Sunday service to the area that had been eliminated with the reduction of service on the 67 PHARMACY bus on February 18, 1996.

At the request of Markham Transit, service established on a new 24D branch of the VICTORIA PARK bus extended to operate from Victoria Park station to Major Mackenzie, replacing the 24E branch.

During the morning peak periods, buses operate via north on Victoria Park, west on Dinison, north on Woodbine, west on Lanark, south, west, north and east on Cochrane Drive, north on Frontenac Drive, west on Centurian Drive, north on Allstate Parkway, east on Valleywood Drive, north on Renfrew Drive, east on Hooper Road, north on Woodbine, west on Hillmount Road and north on Markland Street to Major MacKenzie Drive. Buses return via east on Major Mackenzie, south on Woodbine, east on Denison and south on Victoria Park to Victoria Park station.

During the afternoon peak periods, buses operate via north on Victoria Park, west on Denison Street, north on Woodbine Avenue, west on Hillmount Road, and north on Markland Street to Major Mackenzie Drive. November 24, 2002

Coincident with the launch of the SHEPPARD SUBWAY, service on the 24A “Consumers” branch revised to operate between Victoria Park station and Don Mills station, replacing the 85C SHEPPARD EAST bus. Service operates during rush hours and midday weekdays (every 12 minutes during the morning rush, 30 minutes during the midday, and every 10 minutes 20 seconds during the afternoon rush). Service operates in both directions via Victoria Park, Consumers Road, Yorkland Boulevard, Consumers and Sheppard Avenue.

In addition, service on the 24C “14th Avenue” and 24D “Major Mackenzie” branches are replaced by the 224 VICTORIA PARK NORTH bus, operating from Don Mills station.

The north end Sunday loop via Gordon Baker, Pharmacy and Steeles is no longer operated as Sunday service on Pharmacy is now provided by the 167 PHARMACY NORTH route. Now “Steeles” trips on this route turn back at the off-street loop just north of Steeles, seven days a week. (JK)

June 24, 2013

At the request of York Region Transit, Service on the 24D “Major Mackenzie” branch is revised, eliminating service on Hooper Drive, Renfrew Drive, Valleywood Drive, Allstate Parkway, Frontenac Drive, Cochrane Drive and Lanark Road. Buses now travel directly north and south on Woodbine Avenue between Denison Street and Major Mackenzie Drive. The last day of service on the affected streets is Friday, June 21, 2013.

June 22, 2014

As part of a system-wide reorganization of route branch designation, all northbound buses to Don Mills station via Consumers are redesignated 24B from 24A. This is an interim measure to get passengers used to the new route branch designation before redesignating all “Steeles” buses 24A from 24.
