History of Kipling Avenue
Mimico Avenue was surveyed in 1795 as a Meridian Street south of the east-west Meridian (now known as Rathburn Road) with lots to the east running east-west and lots to the west running north-south, a pattern later subdivisions preserved in modern side streets. Most of the road traverses residential neighbourhoods and pockets of industrial and commercial hubs. The street became a central street for the Lake Shore municipalities of New Toronto (in which it is situated) and Long Branch. Rumors that Mimico Avenue was named in honour of Rudyard Kipling, author of such works as The Jungle Book and the Just So Stories, in preparation for a planned visit to Woodbridge in 1907. Kipling cancelled at the last moment, but the street retained the name. Eighteenth Street was the alternate name that is located in the section of New Toronto named twice.
Relying on the developments years after World War II, Kipling Avenue needed bus service as the suburbs of New Toronto are quickly growing with homes and schools being built. And on September 14, 1959, it became a reality. New Toronto was merged into Etobicoke in 1967 and became part of the new amalgamated Toronto in 1998.
September 14, 1959
In recognition of the development of the suburbs of New Toronto and the borough of Etobicoke, a new rush hour service is inaugurated on Kipling Avenue (18th Avenue through New Toronto) between Lakeshore Boulevard and Rathburn Road. At the south end, buses loop in Kipling loop just north of Lakeshore Boulevard, while at the north end, buses loop via west on Random, north on Burrows and east on Rathburn.
