Coincident with the opening of the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY extension to Islington, service begins on 46 MARTIN GROVE, replacing a branch of 2 ANGLESEY and providing a more direct route between Martin Grove and the subway.
Buses depart Islington subway station and proceed west on Bloor Street, southwest on Dundas Street, around the Kipling (Six Points) interchange, then north on Joplin, east on Bloor, north on Kipling, west on Rathburn Road, north on Lloyd Manor Drive, west on Princess Margaret Boulevard and north on Martin Grove. At the north end, buses loop via east on the Westway, south on Callowhill Drive and west on Sedgley Drive to Martin Grove. Buses operate seven days a week, 18 hours a day.
Since this route in entirely in Zone 2, the normal pay enter-free leave fare collection procedure will apply, with transfer privileges to all connecting Zone 2 services. Passengers must pay a separate fare at the subway if they wish to continue their journey downtown.
The route operates out of Queensway garage via Roncesvalles division.

Service extended north of Albion Road to an off-street loop on the east side of Martin Grove, just south of Silverstone. Service now operates 18 hours a day, 7 days a week on this branch. The Westway short turn service continues to operate during rush hours, weekday and Saturday evenings, and also all-day on Sundays and holidays.

The Westway short turn service is discontinued with all buses running through to Royal Crest. Base service is every 20 minutes, with service at every 10 minutes during rush hours.
November 22, 1980
Coincident with the extension of the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY to Kipling, service is cut back to Kipling station. Buses are rerouted to operate in the south via west on Bloor, south on Jupiter and south on Aukland. Buses leave Kipling station via east on St Albans and north on Kipling.

Looping at Royal Crest in the north revised. Buses loop via east on Silverstone, north on Mt. Olive and west on Gihon Springs to Martin Grove and return.

Monday to Friday service extended north on Martin Grove past Royal Crest to Steeles, and then east on Steeles to the off-street loop at Steeles and Kipling. Additional service is provided to the off-street loop just south of Silverstone during rush hours.

Coincident with the extension of the 60 STEELES WEST to Martin Grove, 46 MARTIN GROVE buses are rerouted to operate via north on Martin Grove and west on Steeles to the new off-street loop on the south side of Steeles. Buses now run 7 days a week, 18 hours a day to Steeles, discontinuing service on the Royalcrest on-street loop. No change to destination signs or rush hour short turn service.

The “A” branch designation is dropped from the bus route.

Upon closure of Lansdowne Garage, service operations transferred from Queensway Garage to Arrow Road Garage.

This route is now designated as accessible using new Orion V lift equipped buses. In 2002, these vehicles were replaced by the NOVA RTS models coming from Danforth garage when it closed.

Buses rerouted to operate to Kipling station via Kipling and St. Albans Road, following the same routing as the 45 KIPLING instead of via Bloor Street and Aukland Road.
May 22, 2004
Accessible service changed from RTS lift equipped buses to the new Orion VII low-floor buses.
January 1, 2006
46 MARTIN GROVE buses now share the bus bay at Kipling station with the 30 LAMBTON bus route.
March 28, 2021
On this day, McNicoll Garage begins operation for revenue service. In conjunction with the changes, buses on this route were transferred from Arrow Road Garage to Queensway Garage.
