July 1, 1954
Coincident with the Toronto Transit Commission taking over responsibility for all public transit services within the borders of Metropolitan Toronto, MALTON service is bought out by the TTC and taken over by its subsidiary Grey Coach Lines. Highway coaches replace West York and District buses. Buses run from Jane and Bloor via west on Bloor, west on Dundas, north on Highway 27 and west and northwest Airport Road to Malton. During rush hours, buses operate from Keele and Dundas via north on Keele, northwest on Weston Road, west on Lawrence, north on Scarlett, west on Malton Road (today’s Dixon Road) and northwest on Airport Road to Malton.
December 11, 1955
Last day of operation of the Gray Coach lines’ MALTON service. TTC service begins the following day.
Toronto Transit Commission Operations
December 12, 1955
Service begins on the MALTON TTC route, using “red” TTC buses. Buses run from Weston and Lawrence, via west on Lawrence, north on Scarlett Road, west on Malton Road (now known as Dixon Road), northwest on Airport Road, west on Scarboro to a wye at York and return over the reverse route. The looping in Weston is via north on Main Street (now Weston Road), east on John, south on South Station and west on Lawrence. Some rush hour trips detour (westbound in the morning, eastbound in the afternoon) to the Orenda plant via the Malton Sideroad (now Derry Road. The plant was near today’s Malton GO Station.
The route operates in fare zones 2 through 6 and the zone boundaries are as follows:
- Zone 2/3 boundary - Malton Rd. & Islington
- Zone 3/4 boundary - Malton Rd. & Highway 27
- Zone 4/5 boundary - Malton Rd. & Metro Toronto boundary
- Zone 5/6 boundary - Airport Road at Airport Gate, in the vicinity of today’s intersection of Airport Road & Orlando During rush hours an easterly extension operates to the Gas Turbine Plant. (The location of this plant and the routing are unknown.)
A separate REXDALE branch operates from Weston via west on Lawrence, north on Scarlett, west on Malton Rd., north on Islington, west on Elmhurst, and southwest on Redwater, looping counter clockwise via Tofield. During rush hours this service is extended northwest via west on Redwater, south on Kipling and west on Rexdale looping at the Fina service station on the northeast corner of Rexdale & Martin Grove. The boundary between zones 2 and 3 is at Malton Rd. & Islington. During off-peak hours, MALTON service is combined with REXDALE and is known as MALTON-REXDALE on TTC documents and on transfers, although separate rollsigns are used for each route. Indeed, according to the TTC’s Orders & Notices for this day, “The MALTON and the REXDALE routes are for the present to be operated during normal hours by the same vehicle. To segregate the revenue on each of the routes, two fareboxes, each bearing the name of the route, will be carried. Operators will ensure that the proper farebox is used on each route.”
The route is operated out of Parkdale Garage.

January 16, 1956
The turnback in Malton is revised to eliminate the wying maneuver, buses now loop via north on Airport Road, west on Ripon, north on York, east on Scarborough and south on Airport Road.
July 1, 1956
Service combination with the REXDALE branch ends. MALTON service is combined with the WESTMOUNT route (roughly today’s 79 SCARLETT RD route) and is officially known as the MALTON-WESTMOUNT route on TTC documents and transfers, although they operate with separate rollsigns. In today’s terminology the two routes are interlined at Lawrence and Weston Road. In off peak hours one bus operates over the combined route with a headway of 120 minutes between Dundas and Runnymede and Malton via Weston. During peak hours, four buses provided a 30 minute service.
September 7, 1956
Route number 58 is assigned to the MALTON service.

Rush hour service to the Orenda plant in Malton is discontinued.
March 12, 1957
Buses now loop in Malton via north on Airport Road, east on Churchill, north on Victory, west on McNaughton and south on Airport Road. This construction detour became the permanent west end looping on May 14, 1957.
January 5, 1958
Service on the 87 WESTMOUNT route is replaced by 93 WOODBRIDGE and separated from 58 MALTON. Buses on 58 MALTON operate as normal between Malton and Weston.
Around this time, one suburban fare zone within Metropolitan Toronto is eliminated, so the new fare zone boundaries are as follows:
- Zone 2/3 boundary - Dixon & Islington
- Zone 3/4 boundary - Dixon at Mimico Creek
- Zone 4/5 boundary - Airport Rd. at the old Airport Administration Building (located near the intersection of Airport Road and Orlando, and the building may be the old airport terminal).
July 1, 1958
Service into the Malton Convalescent Hospital is discontinued due to the closure of the hospital. The hospital is believed to also have been known as the Compensation Hospital which was located on Elmbank Road, just west of Airport Road. It is not known exactly when service to the Convalescent hospital began, or what route it took to get there.
November 1958
The airport is sold by the City of Toronto to the federal government. It becomes known as “Toronto International Airport” in 1960.
June 15, 1959
Due to construction of the CNR overpass over Lawrence, the Weston looping is now via east on Lawrence, north and east on Little then south on Main Street (Weston Road) and west on Lawrence.
September 25, 1960
With construction of the rail overpass complete, the looping in Weston is returned to its original route, via east on Lawrence, north on Weston Road, east on John, south on South Station and west on Lawrence.
February 1, 1962
At the request of Metropolitan Council, the suburban fare zones within Metropolitan Toronto’s boundaries are consolidated into one, eliminating the zone boundary at Dixon Road and Islington, and shifting the zone boundary at Mimico Creek a short distance west to the Indian Line (then Metropolitan Toronto’s western boundary). Indian Line is today the route of Highway 427 north of Highway 401.
December 29, 1963
With the opening of a new terminal at Toronto’s International Airport, a short turn service is established with buses looping clockwise through the newly opened airport access road. There is no change to the main branch, although rollsigns are altered to say “McNaughton” after McNaughton Road instead of “Malton” after the town.

The pocket timetable for this date shows several trips that run through the airport on their way to or from McNaughton. Generally these trips are around midnight seven days a week, and very early in the morning on Saturdays, and Sundays. These are not listed as a separate branch on destination signs.
1967
In this year, the town of Malton and neighbouring areas are amalgamated to form the new Town of Mississauga. The Town becomes the City of Mississauga in 1974.

May 1, 1978
The section of the route west of Indian Line (outside Metro Toronto) is consolidated into a single fare zone, now known as “Zone 3”. Previously this section of the route was in two zones, with a boundary between Zone 3 and Zone 4 on Airport Road in the vicinity of Orlando Drive, near the old airport terminal.
July 23, 1978
Routing at the airport revised to serve the new Terminal 2. Buses enter the airport via Caroga Drive, follow roadway north of Administration Building, left on Ring Road, using outside road in Terminal 1. Exit from Terminal 1 following Service Road to Aeroquest Road, use Deliveries Road to Outside Road of Arrivals Level at Terminal 2. Exit Terminal 2 via service Road to Caroga Drive and on to Airport Road.

Editor’s Note: This change was the result of three years of study after Etobicoke Council petitioned the TTC in 1982 to provide a direct service between Toronto’s International Airport and the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY. The suggested route was a combination of 58 MALTON with 73 ROYAL YORK to Royal York station. Transfers were printed and even a rollsign exposure was installed on buses at Queensway garage.
ROYAL YORK | 73 | A I R P O R T |
Sign made but never used |
However, the TTC commissioned a ridership study which showed that the overwhelming majority of 58 MALTON passengers transferred to 52 LAWRENCE to travel further east. Thus the above change was made instead.
October 19, 1987
Monday through Friday off peak trips to Westwood are no longer operating through the Airport, effectively replacing the 58C branch with 58B.
March 19, 1988
Earlier Saturday morning trips are added to the 58A Air Terminal branch between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. This is in addition to the 58D trips that continue to run via the Air Terminal until approx. 9 a.m. After 9 a.m. on Saturdays, trips to McNaughton operate on the main branch, bypassing bypassing the airport terminals.
November 20, 1988
Operation of this route is transferred from Lansdowne Garage to the newly opened Arrow Road Garage.
September 7, 1993
Before 9:30 a.m. seven days a week, buses on the 58A branch now serve Terminal 1 first, and then serve Terminal 2. This allows passengers heading for the airport to leave the bus, before it takes a layover at Terminal 2.
February 18, 1996
Operation of this route is transferred from Arrow Road Garage to Wilson Garage. This is the day when major cuts were made across the TTC network, and the Lansdowne Garage was closed.
September 6, 1998
Airport buses now serve Terminal 2 first then serve the stop near the site of the former Administration building. The third stop in the airport, near the entrance to Terminal 1 is no longer served. This route through the airport is followed all day long, thus ending the routing change at 9:30 a.m.
April 1, 1999
The looping of “Airport” trips is adjusted due to on-going construction at the International Airport. The stop near the site of the Administration Building is eliminated. 58A buses now serve Terminal 2 only.

January 29, 2007
The stop at Terminal 2 is removed at the end of service on this date, as this terminal is now closed permanently.
February 2, 2007
Following the closing of Terminal 2, the order of stops at the airport is revised, now buses serve Terminal 3, the shuttle bus stop above Jetliner Road and then Terminal 1.
November 23, 2008
Operation of this route is transferred from Wilson Garage to the new Mount Dennis Garage.
August 2, 2009
