October 10, 1948
Effective 4:30 a.m., service begins on a new diesel bus route replacing the NORTH YONGE electric interurban service. Buses operate from Glen Echo loop at the north end of the YONGE streetcar and follow Yonge Boulevard across the high level bridge over the west branch of the Don River to Yonge Street (this high level bridge is currently in use as a portion of the 401, after having been rebuilt for the highway) and continuing north on Yonge to Richmond Hill (just north of Hunt Avenue), returning via the reverse route.
Service on Yonge Street through Hogg's Hollow is provided by the new YORK MILLS bus.
October 20, 1948
A short turn service is added, with buses looping via east on Benson Avenue, north on Church Street and west on Langstaff Road (Highway 7). This short turn service runs north on Yonge Street through Hogg's Hollow.
January 10, 1949
Additional service provided from Glen Echo to Stop 6 in the old village of Lansing (approximately Sheppard Avenue). The route now has multiple short turn services, including the following:
- LANSING (Sheppard) - Buses loop via west on Elmhurst Avenue, south on Kennington and east on Harlandale Avenue.
- WILLOWDALE - Buses loop via east on Kingsdale Avenue, north on Doris Avenue and west on Parkview Avenue.
- FINCH'S - Buses loop via east on Olive Avenue, north on Kenneth Avenue and west on Finch Avenue to Yonge.
- LANGSTAFF - buses loop via east on Benson Avenue, north on Church Street and west on Langstaff Road (Highway 7).

7 days a week, 18 hours a day |
Note the use of apostrophes in "Finch" and "Steele". Intriguingly, these names would change over time, so that Finch would lose its apostrophe-s altogether, while Steele would have the "s" incorporated directly into its name.
January 13, 1949
Rush hour LANSING buses extended north to Stop 8 (Willowdale) and routed through Hogg's Hollow.
January 26, 1949
Most service now routed through Hogg's Hollow, replacing the YORK MILLS bus. LANSING short-turn service officially discontinued on this date, with additional service routed to Stop 8 in Willowdale.
November 19, 1952
Service on a new branch begins, linking to the Armour Heights area. Buses operate from Glen Echo loop via northwest on Yonge Boulevard, west on Wilson Avenue and north on Avenue Road, looping counterclockwise via east on Bombay Avenue, north on Tregellis Road, west on Sandringham Drive and south on Bideford Avenue back to Avenue Road. One bus provides service on a 20 minute headway, Mondays through Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to midnight (leaving Glen Echo) and 7:10 a.m. to 12:10 a.m. (leaving Sandringham). This is the beginning of the ARMOUR HEIGHTS route.
September 17, 1952
The Steeles short-turn service now operates through a newly opened off-street loop on the south side of Steeles, just east of Yonge. Service on the loop of Nipigon and Dudley discontinued.
January 1st, 1954
Effective on this date, the responsibility for furnishing transportation service on the section of NORTH YONGE from Steeles Avenue south, now rests fully with Toronto Transit Commission and not the former Township of North York.
January 15, 1954
ARMOUR HEIGHTS is officially classified as a separate route rather than a branch of NORTH YONGE service. A service reduction and a rerouting eventually follow.
March 7, 1954
Coincident with the cutback of the YONGE streetcar from Glen Echo loop to Eglinton carhouse, and the launch of the YONGE BUS (diesel to start, electric trolley buses soon to follow), all in conjunction with the imminent opening of the YONGE SUBWAY, service is extended south of Glen Echo loop via Yonge Street to loop through Eglinton carhouse to connect with YONGE streetcars. Buses operate express on Yonge south of Glen Echo loop. Some buses continue to operate from Glen Echo north on certain times of the day, with passengers using YONGE buses to connect with the rest of the TTC system.
March 22, 1954
Southbound buses no longer enter Glen Echo loop and instead discharge passengers on Yonge Street at Melrose.
March 30, 1954
The YONGE SUBWAY opens. Effective 1:30 p.m., NORTH YONGE buses now pick up passengers from the Eglinton station bus terminal. Southbound buses operate from Glen Echo Loop, south on Yonge, west on Castlefield, south on Duplex, east on Eglinton, entering Eglinton Terminal into platform 9 or 10, depending on their schedule. Northbound buses leave their platform, proceed south and east on the station roadway to Yonge, and then head north on Yonge over regular route. Service continues to operate express between Eglinton and Glen Echo loop.
April 24, 1954
Buses rerouted southbound via Yonge Street from Castlefield to Eglinton.
July 1st, 1954
As part of a general restructuring of services and fare structures, with the TTC now in charge of all transit service within the boundaries of Metropolitan Toronto, service on NORTH YONGE is revised. Base service operates from the Eglinton subway terminal to Richmond Hill, looping in an off-street loop just north of Hunt Avenue). Additional short turn service is provided north from Glen Echo loop (designated CITY LIMITS), north to Parkview (looping via east on Empress, north on Doris and west on Parkview, designated PARKVIEW), north to Olive (looping via east on Olive, north on Doris, west on Finch, designated FINCH'S) and north to Steeles loop (designated STEELE'S)
Limited night service is likely offered at this time between Richmond Hill and Glen Echo Loop. A TTC Night Services map from 1960 shows northbound departures from Glen Echo for Richmond Hill at 1 a.m., 2:20 a.m. and 3:40 a.m.
At this time, one-line destination signs are still used, although a few signs were produced as follows:

At all other times, all NORTH YONGE buses load from platform 6. NORTH YONGE vehicles will operate EXPRESS from Eglinton Station to Stop 12 during rush hours.
July 11, 1955
Revised vehicle movements at Glen Echo Terminal. Northbound NORTH YONGE vehicles will proceed into the Terminal via the roadway immediately north of the concession and load or unload passengers at the assigned berth. The vehicles will then exit the Terminal via the existing Gray Coach Loop to Yonge Street. Southbound routing not changed.
September 7, 1956
Assigned route number 59 (along with all Eglinton garage routes).

September 9, 1957
The Senlac (59D) and Willowdale (59C) branches are decoupled from the main 59 NORTH YONGE route midday weekdays and on Saturdays and are interlined into a single U-shaped branch (59G). Buses operate from Bathurst and Finch in the west via east on Finch, south on Senlac, east on Sheppard and north on Willowdale to Finch.

February 26, 1966
With the opening of the BLOOR DANFORTH SUBWAY rendering the "SUBWAY" destination sign too vague and confusing, route signs on 59 NORTH YONGE are revised. This primarily affected newer buses, as older buses scheduled for retirement within the next couple of years would not receive these new signs.
Note the distinction below of the express branch (59A versus 59). Although all scheduled trips Mondays through Saturdays ran express in both directions between Eglinton and Glen Echo Loop, a timetable from 1971 suggests that certain rush hour trips (especially northbound afternoon trips) operated express between Eglinton Station and Steeles Avenue, with no drop-offs allowed before Steeles Avenue. The timetable does not explicitly designate these trips as "59A", however, and these express-to-Steeles runs aren't shown in the 1972 timetable.
Some trips operated over Duplex Avenue to Lawrence, until local homeowners complained.
