Coincident with the extension of the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY to [Warden station](/subway/stations/002-bloor-danforth-subway/warden.shtml), service begins on a new route serving Warden and Birchmount Avenues south of St. Clair, replacing service on parts of the 17 BIRCHMOUNT and 43 KENNEDY bus routes operating south of St. Clair Avenue.

Buses operate from Warden station via south on Warden, east on Kingston Road, north on Birchmount, past St. Clair, to loop via west on Chestnut Crescent, south on Anaconda Avenue and east on Willowmount to Birchmount, returning via the reverse route. Service operates 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. Operation is based out of Birchmount garage.

Additional morning rush hour trips are operated on Warden between [Warden station](/subway/stations/002-bloor-danforth-subway/warden.shtml) and Danforth Avenue for students heading to the Warden Woods campus of Centennial College, located a couple of blocks north of Danforth Road. A limited number of trips ran north from Danforth Avenue in the afternoon rush to serve homebound students from the college.

Initially, this service was not designated as a distinct branch. Later, however, these extra trips were designated as 69A (Danforth - Warden Stn). The campus closed in September 2004, and it is not known if the 69A trips lasted as long as that.

Early 1990s

With the introduction of electronic signs, the TTC begins to distinguish between the clockwise and counter-clockwise version of the 69 WARDEN SOUTH service, although not listing them as separate branches.

As part of a system-wide cut in services resulting from the elimination of provincial subsidies for public transportation, clockwise looping (south on Birchmount, north on Warden) is eliminated during the late evening, Mondays through Fridays.

August 31, 2003

Southbound destination signs now show "via Warden" and "via Birchmount" but no longer display the 69B branch. Although these branch designations continue to be used internally and on service schedules, all rollsigns show just "69".

Note that the letter B was dropped on destination signs a few years before this but the exact date is not known. It continued to appear in some public information such as schedules.

This route is designated accessible using low-floor Orion VII buses on all routes.

November 23, 2008

Weekday late evening, Saturday evening and all day Sunday and holiday service restored on the clockwise loop (south on Birchmount, north on Warden) as part of the TTC's Ridership Growth Strategy.

January 3, 2010

For better identification of the direction each bus in service takes, counter-clockwise (southbound on Warden) buses are now identified as 69A.

The 69A and 69B branches are adjusted to simplify directions for customers, and stay consistent with other routes that operate opposite directions in loops. The 69A is set to operate counter-clockwise, via Warden Avenue, Kingston Road, Birchmount Road, St Clair Avenue, while the 69B operates clockwise via St Clair Avenue, Birchmount Road, Kingston Road, Warden Avenue. The route will continue to operate in a north-south orientation on customer-facing information.
