February 26, 1966

Coincident with the opening of the BLOOR-DANFORTH SUBWAY, service begins on a new bus route replacing a portion of the HARBORD streetcar and the 3 ASHBRIDGE bus. Buses operate from Pape subway station via south on Pape, west on Riverdale, and south on Carlaw. Buses on the main “72” branch loop via east on Queen, south on Pape and west on Eastern Avenue to Carlaw, returning via the reverse route. Buses on the 72A branch continue south on Carlaw and west on Commissioners to Munition, taking a U-turn through the intersection and doubling back on Commissioners to the Don Roadway. From there, buses head north on Saulter, west on Lake Shore Boulevard East and north on Parliament to Parliament loop just south of King Street, returning via the reverse route.

Buses on the main branch operate ever ten minutes or better, 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. Buses on the 72A branch operate every twenty minutes on weekdays during rush hours and midday, with additional service on weekdays from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Service is initially operated out of Sherbourne Garage.

The inaugural route was a diversion of the original 3 ASHBRIDGE service, and the result of heavy traffic being barred from the Cherry Street lift bridge until renovations could be done.

March 9, 1966

Service on Commissioners is extended west and now loops via north on Cherry, east on Villiers and south on Munition before heading east on Commissioners. Larger buses are no longer able to make the U-turn at Munition and Commissioners.

July 4, 1966

Trips through the Port area now operate via west on Commissioners, north on the Don Roadway (instead of Saulter) and west on Lake Shore Boulevard, returning via the reverse route.

April 23, 1967

Operation of this route is transferred from Sherbourne Garage to Danforth Garage.

September 16, 1968

With the reopening of the Cherry Street lift bridge to heavy traffic, service on 72 PAPE is revised to operate via west on Commissioners, north on Cherry Street and west on Lakeshore, eliminating service on the Don Roadway, and the doubling-back loop via Villiers and Munitions.

May 20, 1980

Service in the Cherry Street/Lake Shore area is revised, with westbound buses operating via Cherry past Lake Shore to Mill Street, west on Mill Street to Parliament and north on Parliament to Parliament loop. Eastbound buses continue to operate from Parliament loop, Parliament, Lake Shore and Cherry.

To provide additional service to the developing Distillery District, eastbound buses now operate from Parliament loop via south on Parliament, east on Mill and south on Cherry Street. Service on Parliament Street south on Mill and on Lake Shore Boulevard between Parliament and Cherry is now eliminated. No change to service levels or destination signs.

July 23, 2000

Coincident with the launch of the 509 HARBOURFRONT and the elimination of the 121 FRONT-ESPLANADE route, service on the 72A (Pape Station to King via Commissioners) and 72C (Pape Station to Cherry Street via Commissioners) is replaced by a new service operating from Pape Station via south on Pape, west on Riverdale, south on Carlaw, west on Commissioners, north on Cherry, west on Mill and north on Parliament to Front. From there, buses continue west on Front, south on Berkeley, west on the Esplanade and north on Yonge, looping via west on Wellington, south on Bay (connecting with Union Station on the YONGE SUBWAY) and east on Front past Yonge to Scott Street and south on Scott to the Esplanade, returning east on the Esplanade via the reverse route. Service on the Esplanade operates in conjunction with the 65A PARLIAMENT route.

Buses on the new 72A “Union Station” branch operate during rush hours and midday on weekdays. Buses no longer serve Parliament loop or Villiars and Munitions. See this PDF of a flyer promoting this service extension.

Service begins on a seasonal service to Cherry Beach. In conjunction with the newly launched 172 CHERRY STREET bus, service on a new 72B PAPE (Pape Station to Union Station via Cherry Beach) is launched, operating over the regular 72A route from Pape Station to Commissioners and Cherry and then south on Cherry through the Cherry Beach loop, serving the International Ferry Terminal and returning to Commissioners before continuing via the remainder of the 72A route to Union Station. Service operates during the midday and afternoon peak hours on Weekdays.

Due to seasonal service reductions, service ends on the 72B branch of the PAPE bus, with the service reverting to the 72A operation (Pape station to Union Station via Commissioners). Monday to Friday daytime service is operating every 40 minutes, and interlined with the 172 CHERRY STREET bus. This seasonal extension is not provided again until 2009, as the bulk of service to Cherry Beach is provided by 172 CHERRY STREET.

November 22, 2008

In accordance with the TTC’s Ridership Growth Strategy, service on the Pape Station-Union Station branch of the 72 PAPE bus is extended to operate seven days a week, whenever the subway is open, effectively replacing the 172 CHERRY STREET routes.

Around the same time Mount Dennis Garage opens for operations, service on this route is transferred to Birchmount Garage.

May 10, 2009 - September 7, 2009

Seasonal service resumes on the 72B PAPE branch via Commissioners and Cherry Street to Cherry Beach. Buses operate Weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next morning.

September 30, 2009

Buses on this route are now equipped with bike racks.

May 9, 2010

Due to ongoing construction at Pape Station, buses are diverted via Danforth Avenue and Donlands to Donlands station. Also on this date, Seasonal service resumes on the 72B PAPE branch via Commissioners and Cherry Street to Cherry Beach, operating weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next morning.

Due to low ridership, service is removed from Carlaw and Eastern to Union Station after 7 p.m., Sundays and holidays. Sunday evening service will only be operated on this portion of the route as a seasonal extension from mid-May to early October.

April 23, 2012

Due to the closure of Cherry Street north of Lake Shore Boulevard, 72 PAPE buses are diverted to operate both ways from Cherry and Lakeshore to Parliament and Mill via Lake Shore and Parliament. This diversion was expected to last for over a year. Cherry Street wasn’t reopened until Saturday, June 21, 2014, at which time service was being provided by the 172 CHERRY STREET bus.

May 6, 2012 to October 6, 2012

Seasonal service resumes on the 72B PAPE branch via Commissioners and Cherry Street to Cherry Beach. Service on south of Eastern Avenue now operates 18 hours a day, 7 days a week.

October 15, 2012

Due to construction at Union Station closing Front Street between Bay and Yonge, service is temporarily rerouted. Buses on the 72A branch operate over the regular route to Esplanade and Church and then operate via north on Church to loop via west on Wellington, north on York and east on King to Church Street. This, along with other construction diversions (off of Esplanade and Yonge for the L Tower construction, and the closure of the Cherry Street bridge) is only formally written into the schedule on June 23, 2013.

January 5, 2014

Coincident with construction through the West Don Lands and Union Station, service west of Cherry Street is replaced by a resurrected 172 CHERRY STREET bus. Buses on the new 72C branch operate from Pape Station to Cherry Street and Commissioners, looping via north on Cherry, east on Villiers and south on Munitions. Buses operate Monday to Saturday, whenever the subway is open, and on Sundays and holidays up to 7 p.m. After 7 p.m. on Sundays and holidays, buses turn back at Carlaw and Eastern Avenue (previously known as the “Queen” branch).

On or around this date, most base service is extended from Eastern Avenue to Commissioners and Cherry Street. Service on Commissioners again operates 7 days a week, whenever the subway is open.

June 19, 2016

As part of the completion of Union Station renovations on Front Street, and part of a general improvement of service to the Distillery District and the Port Lands, service on the 72 PAPE bus is revised to provide through service to Queen’s Quay East. Service on the 72B branch operates from Pape station on the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway line via south on Pape Avenue, west on Riverdale Avenue, south on Carlaw Avenue, west on Commissioners Street, north on Cherry Street, west on Lake Shore Boulevard, south and west on Queens Quay East, north on Yonge Street, west on Wellington Street, south on Bay Street to Front Street (Union Station), returning via south on Bay and east on Queen’s Quay, east on Lake Shore, south on Cherry, east on Commissioners, north on Carlaw, east on Riverdale and north on Pape to Pape station.

Additional service is provided at all service hours except for overnight by the 72A branch, operating from Pape station via south on Pape, west on Riverdale and south on Carlaw to loop via east on Queen, south on Pape and west on Eastern to Carlaw, returning north via the reverse route.

The loop near Union Station is revised to improve reliability. Buses now operate in both directions via Queen’s Quay and Bay Street to Front Street, and then loop via east on Front, north on Yonge, west on Wellington and south on Bay. This move allows buses to observe recovery time on the bus stop located on Front Street just east of Bay Street.

October 30, 2019

Due to Waterfront Toronto closing Commissioners Street from Cherry to Saulter as part of its Port Lands Flood Protection project, TTC service is diverted. Buses from Pape Station to Union Station (72B) follow their route southbound to Commissioners and Saulter Street South, before turning north on Saulter and west on Villiers to rejoin the route at Cherry, returning via the reverse route.

Buses on the 72C “Commissioners” branch proceed along the normal route from Pape Station to Commissioners and Saulter and then operate via north on Saulter, west on Villiers, east on Lakeshore Boulevard East, and south on Saulter to Commissioners, returning to Pape Station over the normal route. No change in service levels or destination signs. This diversion is expected to last until mid-2020.

June 18, 2023

In conjunction with the major trackwork reconstruction at Broadview Station and Broadview Avenue between Danforth and Queen for trackwork, sewer and overhead construction, service on the 72A (Queen) branch is extended westward to via Queen Street West, continuing along King Street West looping south on Parliament, west on Front, north on Berkeley and east on King continuing via reverse route. This diversion restores service on King and Parliament, which was lost in July 2000, temporarily replaces the suspended 504 KING/505 DUNDAS streetcar shuttle buses.

All buses on the 72A (Queen) branch interline with the 100 FLEMINGDON PARK which was diverted from its home station of Broadview to Pape Station via Pape.

As construction on the Ontario Line increases around Pape Station, the Pape Station bus terminal becomes inaccessible to buses. In response, on this day, the TTC combines operations on this and the 81 THORNCLIFFE PARK route, with buses stopping outside the Pape Station entrance rather than entering the bus terminal. To improve the reliability of service in the East Port Lands, the 72B Branch to Union Station is replaced by the new 114 QUEEN’S QUAY EAST route.

The remaining branches operate as follows: southbound buses on the 72A branch (Thorncliffe Park to Eastern Avenue) operate from Thorncliffe Park Drive and Overlea Boulevard via west on Overlea Boulevard, south on Millwood Road, south on Leaside Bridge, south on Pape Avenue (serving Pape Station on-street), west on Riverdale Avenue, south on Carlaw Avenue, east on Queen Street East, south on Pape Avenue, and west on Eastern Avenue to Carlaw Avenue. Northbound buses return via north on Carlaw Avenue, east on Riverdale Avenue, north on Pape Avenue (serving Pape Station on-street), north on Leaside Bridge, north on Millwood Road, east on Overlea Boulevard, and south, east, and north on Thorncliffe Park Drive to Overlea Boulevard.

Southbound buses on the 72C branch (Thorncliffe Park to Commissioners Street) operate from Thorncliffe Park Drive and Overlea Boulevard via west on Overlea Boulevard, south on Millwood Road, south on Leaside Bridge, south on Pape Avenue (serving Pape Station on-street), west on Riverdale Avenue, south on Carlaw Avenue, and west on Commissioners street to Saulter Street. Northbound buses return via north on Saulter Street, east on Lake Shore Boulevard East, south on Bouchette Street, east on Commissioners Street, north on Carlaw Avenue, east on Riverdale Avenue, north on Pape Avenue (serving Pape Station on-street), north on Leaside Bridge, north on Millwood Road, east on Overlea Boulevard, and south, east, and north on Thorncliffe Park Drive to Overlea Boulevard.
