80 Queensway

Compiled by Pete Coulman

September 1, 1963

As part of a system-wide realignment and improvement of suburban TTC services, service begins on the 80 QUEENSWAY bus, replacing portions of the 69 QUEENSWAY and 55 MIMICO buses and providing a new through bus service on the Queensway from Humber Loop to Highway 427. Buses operate from Humber Loop via west on the Queensway, south on Highway 27 and west on Lake Shore Boulevard into Long Branch loop, returning via the reverse route. Service operates 7 days a week, 18 hours a day.

In addition to this service, alternate buses operate from Humber Loop via west on the Queensway, south on Kipling, west on Evans, south on Belman, west on Valermo, south on Highway 27 and west on Lake Shore Boulevard to Long Branch loop, returning via the reverse route. Service operates 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. This adds Sunday service to the old Valermo branch, and eliminates rush hour service on Norseman Drive.

Work on a new interchange between the Queensway and Highway #27 forces a detour in the 80 QUEENSWAY route. For a period of about two years, 80 QUEENSWAY buses operate via west on the Queensway, north on the East Mall, west on North Queen Street, south on North Queensway, west on the Queensway, south on West Mall, east on Sherway Drive and east on Evans Avenue and south on Brown’s Line to Lakeshore and Long Branch loop. Buses return via the reverse route. No change to destination signs, although window cards are used, with westbound buses bearing a sign saying “VIA EAST MALL & NORTH QUEEN” and eastbound buses bearing a sign saying “VIA WEST MALL & NORTH QUEEN”.

February 7, 1971

Service begins on a new branch between Humber loop and Long Branch, replacing the 80A “Valermo” branch. Buses now operate via west on the Queensway, south on Islington, west on Judson and south and west on Horner, then south on Brown’s Line (Highway #27) to Lakeshore and Long Branch loop, returning via the reverse route. Service operates 18 hours a day, 7 days a week at 16:30 minute intervals during rush hours, 30 minutes during off-peak hours and 40 minutes during evenings and Sundays. Service on Evans Avenue is replaced by an extension of 3 KINGSWAY.

Also on this date, the diversion via North Queen is discontinued, and buses on the main branch operate over the normal routing of west on the Queensway, south on West Mall, east on Sherway Drive, east on Evans Avenue and south on Brown’s Line to Lakeshore and Long Branch loop.

As part of a series of system-wide service cuts resulting from the elimination of provincial subsidies for public transit, late evening Monday to Saturday service and all day Sunday service is discontinued. Last trips leave Sherway at 9:48 p.m. and Keele station at 10:00 p.m. (with a 10:24 p.m. departure to to Kipling only)

May 2 - September 6, 1999

Service begins on a special Summer Sunday and holiday service to the Western beaches. Buses on a new branch operate from Keele station via south on Parkside Drive, west on Lakeshore Boulevard, north on Ellis Avenue and west on the Queensway, looping around on the South Kingsway overpass over the Queensway and returning to Keele station over the reverse routing. Buses operate from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sundays and Holidays only.

Also on May 2nd, regular service is changed to operate via Queensway, Ellis Avenue and Lakeshore instead of via Queensway, Colborne Lodge and Lakeshore, to provide better access to the western beaches, and reduce duplication with the 501 QUEEN streetcar.

In an effort to improve the financial performance of the 80A summer Sundays and Holidays branch, the hours of operation were reduced to 1:10 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., eliminating a number of lightly used trips. In addition, it was recommended that this service begin in June rather than on Victoria Day in May. A post-implementation review of this service showed that the service was even less financially viable in 2000 compared to 1999. As the routing only used a single bus, no further service changes could be identified to reduce costs, so the TTC recommended this branch for elimination.

January 7, 2001

Sunday and holiday service is re-established on the main route from Sherway Gardens to Humber loop. Buses on the 80B branch operate from Sherway Gardens via north on the West Mall, east on the Queensway to Humber loop. The service is interlined with 66 PRINCE EDWARD, so buses arriving at Humber loop continue via this route to Old Mill station.

November 23, 2008

As part of the TTC’s Ridership Growth Strategy, service on 80 QUEENSWAY is operated from Keele station to Sherway Gardens 7 days a week, whenever the subway is open, effectively ending the 80B branch.

May 8, 2011

As part of a series of system-wide service cuts resulting from a reduction of municipal transit subsidies, late evening service is cut back, seven days a week. Monday to Friday, late evening service operates between Sherway Gardens and Humber loop only, on the 80B branch, interlined with 66 PRINCE EDWARD. On Saturday and Sunday late evenings, no service is provided on the Queensway at all. Also on this date, Sunday service is cut back to operate between Sherway Gardens and Humber loop only.

Late evening weekend and holiday service is restored, operating on the 80B “Humber Loop-Sherway” branch. Buses now operate on the Queensway west of Humber Loop at intervals of 30 minutes or better whenever the subway is open.

January 8, 2017

Coincident with trackwork on the Queensway and at Humber Loop splitting 501 QUEEN service, late-evening Monday-to-Saturday and all-day Sunday and Holiday service is established on the 80A “Sherway-Keele Stn” branch in order to maintain a connection between the two routes outside of Humber Loop. This effectively ends the 80B branch and service operates between Sherway and Keele Station 7 days a week, whenever the subway is open.

September 2, 2018

Late night Monday-to-Saturday and all Sunday service is extended east from Humber Loop to Keele station, effectively ending the 80B branch of this route.

September 3, 2024

Route reorganized. Service on this route is revised to operate between Sherway Mall and Mimico GO Station. Designated as the 80B, buses operate eastbound from Sherway Gardens, going north on The West Mall, east to Queensway, south on Royal York, southeast on Newcastle Street, northeast on Audley Street, southeast on Portland Street, northeast on Grand Avenue, southeast on Manitoba Street, northeast and southeast on Legion Road North, and south on Park Lawn Road to Park Lawn Loop. Westbound buses operate from Park Lawn Loop via north on Marine Parade Drive, east on Lake Shore Boulevard West, south and west and north on Marine Parade Drive, west on Lake Shore Boulevard West, northwest on Mimico Avenue, north on Royal York Road, west to Queensway and south to The West Mall to Sherway Mall. This adjustment enhances transit connectivity to Mimico GO Station and the Humber Bay Shores community, and better serve key employment areas and new developments that have emerged in the area. Buses operate during rush hours only. Service to Keele Station via Parkside is redesignated as 80A.

The 80B branch replaces service on the 176 MIMICO GO and the 145 DOWNTOWN/HUMBER BAY EXPRESS, which was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is not reinstated after it was declared redundant.
