80 Rexdale (1955-1963)

Compiled by Pete Coulman

December 12, 1955

Service begins on a new service replacing and extending service on Islington Avenue previously provided by WESTMOUNT buses, which are cut back to Lawrence and Main (Weston Road) on this date. Service on the REXDALE route operates using TTC buses from Lawrence and Main in the Village of Weston to the Rexdale Area. After looping clockwise via Main, John, South Station and Lawrence, buses operate via west on Lawrence, north on Scarlett, west on Dixon, north on Islington, west on Elmhurst, south and west on Redwater, looping counterclockwise at Tofield Crescent.

During rush hours, buses continue past Tofield Crescent and operate via Redwater, south on Kipling and west on Rexdale Boulevard to loop in the Fina Gas service station located in the northeast corner of Rexdale Boulevard and Martin Grove Road.

This service operates within the second and third suburban fare zones, with the zone boundary located at the corner of Dixon Road and Islington Avenue. JANE transfers are initially provided, specially punched for service on REXDALE.

Initially, service is interlined with the MALTON route during off-peak hours, with one bus providing service on both routes. To segregate the revenue on each of the routes, two fare boxes, each bearing the name of the route, are carried, with operators required to ensure that the proper firebox is used on each route.

Assigned route number 80.

In order to have the MALTON bus timed to depart the Malton end of the route on even hours during off-peak hours, instead of at odd hours as originally scheduled, and in order to provide a more frequent off-peak bus service on the REXDALE route, the MALTON-REXDALE interlining arrangement is brought to an end. One bus provides hourly off-peak service on the REXDALE route, while MALTON buses are interlined with WESTMOUNT.

Two buses provide half-hourly service during rush hours on the REXDALE route.

Summer 1956

The Summer 1956 issue of The Coupler reports on “New Neighbourhoods” saying “running parallel with the WESTMOUNT service in the 1st part of it’s journey to the outer fringes of Metro are the MALTON-REXDALE routes. These routes, combined during the off-peak hours, turn north to Dixon Side Rd, passing near the old Wadsworth homestead, now the site of the Weston Golf Club. The REXDALE branch of the service is a 9.03-mile round trip. In the morning and evening rush hours, residents are provided with a half0hour service. The bus continues west along Redwater Drive, south on Kipling Avenue and west on Rexdale Blvd to Martingrove Road.”

November 25, 1956

Service extended in the north end along a new branch to serve the Kipling Heights and Sunny Dale Acres areas. Buses on the 80A branch operate along its normal route from Lawrence and Main to Islington and Elmhurst, proceeding west on Elmhurst, west on Genthorn, south on Kipling and east on Redwater, returning to Elmhurst Drive. During rush hours, buses on the 80 branch continue south from Kipling and Redwater via south on Kipling and west on Rexdale to wye at Martin Grove, returning via east on Rexdale, north on Kipling and east on Redwater Drive to Elmhurst, returning to Lawrence and Main.

December 1956

One bus is scheduled to provide hourly service from Main and Weston to Kipling and Genthorn on the 80A branch (a round trip of 9.90 miles) during the midday. Two buses provide half-hourly service during rush hours on the 80 branch from Main and Weston to Martin Grove (a round trip of 11.90 miles).

April 6, 1959

To better serve the expanding industrial area around Martin Grove and Rexdale, service rerouted during rush hours to operate via south on Kipling, west on Rexdale, north on Martin Grove, east on Racing and south on Kipling to Redwater, before heading inbound via Redwater. Destination signs unchanged.

Also on or before this date, service on the Kipling loop is extended so that buses operate via north on Elmhurst, west on Hinton (one block north of Genthorn) and south on Kipling to route.

October 9, 1960

Service on the Kipling loop expanded again. Instead of operating via Hinton Road, buses operate via north on Elmhurst, west on Hinton, north on Harefield Drive, then northwest on Elmhurst again, west on Brookmere and south on Kipling to the route. Midday frequencies increased from hourly to half-hourly. No change to fare collection procedures or to destination signs.

June 7, 1962

Etobicoke council requests that the 80 REXDALE bus be rerouted to operate north on Kipling to the Beaumonde Heights Area, north of the west branch of the Humber River, then return via Kipling over the present routing. The TTC considered this request and found it inconvenient for too many passengers. Instead, the Commission offered an alternative in the form of a separate service from Beaumonde Heights to Blondin Loop. Such a service, providing 40 minute midday service and 20 minute rush hour service on weekdays could cost $43,000 per year. This route was placed in the ‘B’ category for future consideration.

August 31, 1963

Last day of operation. In response to the issues raised by the Etobicoke council request in June 1962, service is replaced by extensions of the 45 KIPLING, 96 WILSON and 37 ISLINGTON routes.
