September 2, 2018

As part of the TTC’s rebranding and expansion of its Express Bus Network services under the 900-series route numbering, service begins on the new 939 FINCH EXPRESS, renumbering and renaming the 199 FINCH ROCKET route. The service operates out of Malvern Garage Monday to Friday, all day, and weekends and holidays during the daytime and early evening.

The service operates in three branches:

• The 939A (Finch station to Scarborough Centre station) operates from Finch station via east on Finch Avenue East, south on McCowan Road, west on Triton Road to Scarborough Centre station, stopping only at Finch Station, Bayview Avenue, Leslie Street, Don Mills Road (farside stop), Seneca Hill Drive, Victoria Park Avenue, Pharmacy Avenue, Warden Avenue, Birchmount Road, Kennedy Road, Midland Avenue, Brimley Road, Finch & McCowan, McCowan & Sheppard, and Scarborough Centre Station. Buses return via the reverse route, stopping only at Scarborough Centre Station, McCowan & Sheppard, Finch & McCowan, Brimley Road, Midland Avenue, Kennedy Road, Birchmount Road, Warden Avenue, Pharmacy Avenue, Victoria Park Avenue, Seneca College, Don Mills Road (farside stop), Leslie Street, Bayview Avenue, and Finch Station. This service operates 7 days a week, 18 hours a day, except weekend and holiday late evenings.
• The 939B (Finch West station to Scarborough Centre loop) extends the 939A service west to Finch West station. Buses operate from Finch West Station via east on Four Winds Drive, north on Tangiers Road, east on busway on hydro corridor, south on Alness Street, east on Finch Avenue West to Finch Station, before resuming the regular route, making additional stops at Finch West Station, Dufferin Street, Goldfinch Court, and Bathurst Street. Westbound buses continue west from Finch station via Finch Avenue West, north on Dufferin Street, west on the busway on hydro corridor, south on Tangiers Road, and west on Four Winds Drive to Finch West Station with additional stops at Bathurst Street, Torresdale Avenue, Dufferin Street, and Finch West Station. This service operates Mondays to Fridays during the daytime and early evening hours.
• Finally, the 939C branch (Finch station to Morningside Heights) operates rush hours only from Finch Station via east on Finch Avenue East, northeast on Staines Road, north on Mantis Road, and west on Nightstar Road to Morningside Avenue. Westbound buses operate EXPRESS from Finch Station to McCowan Road, stopping only at Finch Station, Bayview Avenue, Leslie Street, Don Mills Road (farside stop), Seneca Hill Drive, Victoria Park Avenue, Pharmacy Avenue, Warden Avenue, Birchmount Road, Kennedy Road, Midland Avenue, Brimley Road, McCowan Road. 939C buses then operate LOCAL to Morningside Heights. Buses return from Nightstar Road and Morningside Avenue via north on Morningside Avenue, east on Oasis Boulevard, east on Seasons Drive, south and southwest on Staines Road, west on Finch Avenue to Finch Station. Westbound buses operate LOCAL from Morningside Heights to McCowan Road. 939C buses then operate EXPRESS to Finch Station, stopping only at McCowan Road, Brimley Road, Midland Avenue, Kennedy Road, Birchmount Road, Warden Avenue, Pharmacy Avenue, Victoria Park Avenue, Seneca College, Don Mills Road (farside stop), Leslie Street, Bayview Avenue, and Finch Station.

October 7, 2018

To increase capacity on Finch Avenue West between Finch and Finch West station and reduce crowding for passengers, weekend daytime service added on the 939B branch. Buses operate on Saturdays, Sunday and holidays before about 7 p.m.

March 23, 2020

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, service on this route is temporarily suspended with buses operated by the local 39A/B FINCH EAST buses instead. Additional 36B FINCH WEST service for passengers on the 939B branch operates when required from Finch West station to Finch station with no service on the York University busway. Customers travelling to Scarborough Centre station via the 939A/B branches can transfer to 129 McCOWAN NORTH service at Finch Avenue East and McCowan Road.

Service on the 939C branch to Morningside Heights is provided by the 133 NEILSON route between Neilson and Morningside Heights.

January 4, 2021

Service on the 939 FINCH EXPRESS resumes during Monday to Friday excluding weekends, but at a reduced level compared to pre-pandemic service. Morning peak period service will operate every 3 to 4 minutes. Midday service will operate every 8 to 9 minutes. Afternoon peak period service will operate every 6 minutes. Evening service will operate every 10 to 12 minutes.

March 28, 2021

Operations of this route is transferred from Malvern Garage to the newly-opened McNicoll Garage. As weekend service remains suspended, service on this route did not begin until the following Monday.

SSeptember 5, 2021

Weekend and holiday service is restored on this route, operating during the daytime and early evenings. Schedules are the same as they were during the February 2020 board period.

November 21, 2021

Weekend and holiday service is temporarily suspended due to COVID-19-related ridership declines and staff shortages.

May 8, 2021

Weekend and holiday service is restored on this route with service operating at October 2021 levels.

September 3, 2023

Midday service on the 939A “Finch Station-Scarborough Centre Station” branch is restored. Service on the 939B “Finch West Station” is reduced.

November 19, 2023

Following the closure of the LINE 3 SCARBOROUGH RT in July after a derailment, buses on the 939A/B FINCH EXPRESS branches are extended from Scarborough Centre Station to Kennedy Station along the priority route southbound on Midland Avenue and northbound on Kennedy Road. Stops on Midland/Ellesmere, Midland/Lawrence (southbound) and Kennedy/Lawrence (northbound) are added. Buses on this route board Bay 12 on Platform B in the new terminal at Kennedy Station.

Frequencies are adjusted by approximately one minute Monday-Friday in the morning and afternoon peak periods and on Saturdays in the morning period to match capacity to demand.

Service on the 939C “Morningside Heights” branch is not affected.

Service on the 939 FINCH EXPRESS now converted to operate utilizing 18m Nova LFS Artic clean diesel and New Flyer X-DE-60 diesel-electric hybrid low floor articulated buses.

January 5, 2025

All articulated buses on this route temporarily removed due to operational concerns at level crossings, particularly on Finch Avenue East between Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue. Some articulated buses are re-allocated to service route 927 HIGHWAY 27 EXPRESS.

February 16, 2025

The signage for the 939 FINCH EXPRESS have been standardized to include Scarborough Centre Station for rider identification.

May 11, 2025

Articulated buses on this route have been restored, following a retiming of the railway crossing signals by Metrolinx.
