As part of the TTC’s rebranding and expansion of its Express Bus Network services, service begins on the 986 SCARBOROUGH EXPRESS route, replacing the branch of the 86E SCARBOROUGH EXPRESS, with Eastbound buses operate on the same express routing from Kennedy Station via east on Eglinton Avenue East, northeast on Kingston Road, north on Highland Creek Overpass, northeast on Kingston Road, and north on Meadowvale Road to Meadowvale Loop (on the east side of Meadowvale Road, north of Sheppard Avenue East). Westbound buses route from Meadowvale Loop via south on Meadowvale Road, southwest on Kingston Road, and west on Eglinton Avenue East en route to Kennedy Station.
Express buses stop eastbound at Markham Road and Celeste Drive (Guildwood GO Station) before making all local stops between Celeste Drive and Meadowvale Loop. Service continues to operates out of Eglinton Garage.

986 SCARBOROUGH EXPRESS service is suspended in response the COVID-19 pandemic. Service on rush hours is provided by the local 86A SCARBOROUGH branch with a transfer to 85 SHEPPARD EAST buses.
October 13, 2020
New priority bus lanes open on Eglinton Avenue East from Brimley Road to Kingston Road, on Kingston Road from Eglinton to Morningside Drive and on Morningside Drive from Kingston Road to Ellesmere. Coincident with this, service resumes on this express route during rush hours.

With the opening of McNicoll Garage, buses on this route is moved from Eglinton Garage to Malvern Garage.
