Service begins on a route replacing the old 186 WILSON ROCKET bus between York Mills station and Humber College. Buses operate from the Humber College Bus Terminal via south and east on Humber College Boulevard, south and east on John Garland Boulevard, south on Martin Grove, east on Westhumber, east on Brookmere, southeast and east on Elmhurst, southeast on Albion Road, southeast on Walsh Avenue, east on Wilson, through Wilson station, south on Wilson Heights Boulevard, and continuing east on Wilson Avenue to York Mills Station. Buses return via the reverse route.

Eastbound buses stop at Westmore Drive, Martin Grove Road and John Garland Boulevard, Martin Grove Road at Westhumber Boulevard, Kipling Avenue and Brookmere Road, Islington Avenue and Elmhurst Drive, Armel Court, Albion Road and Weston Road, Walsh Avenue and Weston Road, Clayson Road, Jane Street, Julian Road, Keele Street, Dubray Avenue, Dufferin Street, Wilson station, Bathurst Street, Avenue Road, and York Mills Station. Westbound buses stop at Avenue Road, Bathurst Street (far side), Wilson station, Dufferin Street, Dubray Avenue, Keele Street, Julian Road, Jane Street, Clayson Road, Walsh Avenue and Weston Road, Albion Road and Weston Road, Armel Court, Islington Avenue and Elmhurst Drive, Kipling Avenue and Brookmere Road, Martin Grove Road at Westhumber Boulevard, Martin Grove Road and John Garland Boulevard, Westmore Drive, and Humber College Bus Terminal.

Due to the loss of ridership resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, service on this route is temporarily suspended, with resources diverted to maintaining service on the parallel local routes.

November 23, 2020

Service, cut back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is restored to pre-COVID-19 levels.

May 9, 2021

Due to construction taking place at York Mills Centre, the TTC bus terminal serving York Mills station is closed for a period of three months, starting on this day. 996 WILSON buses are routed to a temporary terminal set up in the parking lot on the northwest corner of Wilson and Yonge. No change to scheduled departure times or destination signs.

January 9, 2023

Route extended east to Ellesmere station via east on York Mills, southeast on Parkwoods Drive, ans east on Ellesmere. Buses operate EXPRESS from York Mills Station to Markham Road, stopping only at Bayview Avenue, Chipstead Road/Banbury Road, Leslie Street, Don Mills Road, Valley Woods Road/Sandover Drive, Brookbanks Drive, Victoria Park Avenue, Pharmacy Avenue, Warden Avenue, Birchmount Avenue, Kennedy Road and to Ellesmere Station. Westbound buses reverse its routing. Buses operate every 10 minutes during rush hours and 13 minutes during midday periods.

This service replaces the 95C YORK MILLS route.

With the implementation of the LINE 3 SCARBOROUGH Bus Replacement Plan, service on the 996 WILSON EXPRESS is extended from Ellesmere Station to Scarborough Centre Station via east on Ellesmere, north on Brimley and east on Triton to connect with other routes at Scarborough Centre Station. A stop on Midland Avenue is added. Service at Ellesmere Station is discontinued.
