Small Arms Loop 19450101

TTC Small Witt car #2830 poses on the private right-of-way on the north side of Lakeshore Road and Dixie in this 1945 shot. Note the "LAKE SHORE" rollsign exposure on the side. This is the only known photograph of a Small Witt streetcar bearing this sign. It's especially odd, as the LAKE SHORE route had vanished on August 2, 1937, and Small Witts were never operated on that route, but the car is in LONG BRANCH service. Perhaps the car never received an updated sign. Small Witts replaced Large Witts on the LONG BRANCH route soon after the Small Arms loop opened, as no additional substation was built to cover the electrical demands of the lengthened route, and Small Witts required less power to operate than Large Witts. Even after the loop was abandoned, however, the Large Witts never returned to LONG BRANCH. The photographer is unknown, and the image is courtesy the John F. Bromley collection.
