TTC Y-18

Y-18 - Standard Gauge Shunter (1940-197?)

This picture shows shunter car Y-18 at the south side of Hillcrest, circa 1958. The photographer is unknown and the image came to us by way of Mike Filey. Y-18 was an electric vehicle that operated by use of a "snake" connected to nearby overhead wiring. It operated with standard gauge trucks in order to move cars around a siding connecting Hillcrest to the nearby Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. It was commissioned in 1940 as a rebuild of former dump car W-15, which itself had been built by the TTC in 1922. Y-18 was listed as still active in the early 1970s, but was likely retired soon after.
