TTC RT-12 19690204

RT-12 - Battery/Electric Locomotive (1968-2009)

In 1968, the TTC purchased an electric locomotive from Nippon-Sharyo for pulling work train equipment. Able to operate off of the third rail, it could also pull equipment through un-powered sections of the line using its battery. The locomotive provided service for the TTC until December 2009 when it was retired and sold for scrap. It was replaced by Arva Industries tri-mode locomotive RT-71. In this shot, R. McMann captured RT-12 at Union station on February 4, 1969. This photo is from the John Knight collection.
