505 Dundas 2017 Diversions

Text by James Bow

In 2017, the City of Toronto began work replacing the watermains beneath Dundas Street. This work would require the tearing up of Dundas Street, tracks and all, forcing the diversion of the 505 DUNDAS streetcar. On April 23, 2017, after some delay, the City of Toronto closed Dundas Street near the Yonge Street intersection, forcing 505 DUNDAS streetcars to divert north to College and Carlton Streets, useing non-revenue trackage on Bay Street and Church Street to get there.

These photos were taken to show 505 DUNDAS cars making use of tracks on Bay and Church that hadn’t seen regular streetcar service since 1963 and 1954 respectively.
