Opening of Ontario Line Diversion Trackage on Richmond and Adelaide Streets
To deal with the ongoing construction of the Ontario Line at the Queen/Yonge intersection, Metrolinx and the TTC worked on the restoration of streetcar tracks on Richmond and Adelaide Streets. The westbound tracks on Richmond from Church to York were restored for service, as well as the eastbound tracks on Adelaide from Spadina to Church, including the intersection of York and Adelaide.
To allow eastbound 501 QUEEN streetcars to use the Adelaide tracks from York, the abandoned southbound tracks were restored, and placed in a counter-flow transit-only lane. A new curve was put in place to turn cars onto Adelaide Street. At the time, regular streetcar service hadn’t operated on Adelade since February 1966, when the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway opened.
Once these tracks were open, service on 501/301 QUEEN was to be restored from Humber/Long Branch in the west to Nevile Park Loop in the east on this day, and that 501 QUEEN shuttle bus services would cease operation. 503 KINGSTON ROAD would cut back to its original downtown loop of Church, Wellington, York and Queen. However, on September 27, the TTC advised that the tracks would not be ready for this day. Instead, the tracks were open and the service changes made on November 9, 2024.
