Carhouse Reallocations

At the request of Streetcar Maintenance, carhouse allocation for all streetcar routes is adjusted to operate exclusively out of one division, to optimize operational efficiency during the ongoing storage space constraints and to better streamline fleet management procedures. This affects the routes in the following ways:

  • 501/301 QUEEN - changed from part Roncesvalles/part Leslie to all Roncesvalles (a temporary overage of the Roncesvalles max in-service figure [to 52 cars] will be accommodated by Streetcar Maintenance, pending the Q1 restoration of the 510 SPADINA service and regular and construction changes to other routes at Leslie Barns to better balance fleet allocation)
  • 504/304 KING - changed from part Roncesvalles/part Leslie to all Leslie
  • 505 DUNDAS - changed from part Roncesvalles/part Leslie to all Leslie
  • 506/306 CARLTON - changed from part Roncesvalles/part Leslie to all Leslie
  • 511 BATHURST - changed from Leslie to Roncesvalles

The following routes are unaffected:

  • 503 KINGSTON ROAD - Still at Russell
  • 507 LONG BRANCH - Still at Roncesvalles
  • 508 LAKE SHORE - Still at Roncesvalles
  • 509 HARBOURFRONT - Still at Leslie
  • 510 SPADINA - Under bus replacement due to construction)
  • 512 ST. CLAIR - Still at Leslie.

Also on this date

303 KINGSTON ROAD NIGHT is altered to loop through Sunnyside Loop instead of through Roncesvalles Carhouse to reduce operational conflicts within the yard. Service is adjusted to better offset departures with 304 KING to provide more evenly spaced trips along their common portions of their routes.

304 KING NIGHT, 305 DUNDAS NIGHT and 306 CARLTON NIGHT service is reduced from 15 minutes to 20 minutes as storage issues at the carhouses ease. 301 QUEEN NIGHT remains at 15 minute intervals, pending the restoration of 310 SPADINA service. The plan is for all streetcar night services to operate at 20 minute intervals.

509 HARBOURFRONT and 511 BATHURST streetcars are restored to their regular routing as overhead work on Fleet Street ends. 510 SPADINA replacement buses continue to operate, but are restructured to operate as a 510B branch between Spadina Station and Queens Quay, looping via west on Lake Shore Boulevard West, south on Dan Leckie Way, east on Queens Quay West (in mixed traffic) and north into the Queens Quay/Spadina loop.

Bathurst/Fleet Watermain and Track Work Reconstruction

The intersection of Bathurst/Fleet/Lake Shore is closed, forcing diversions and bus replacements to the 511 BATHURST and 509 HARBOURFRONT routes.

509 HARBOURFRONT streetcars are cut back to operate between Union Station and Queens Quay/Spadina loop. Replacement buses operate from Queen’s Quay/Spadina via Queen’s Quay, Bathurst, Fort Your Boulevard, Lake Shore, Strachan, Manitoba and the streetcar right-of-way through Exhibition Loop, returning via Fleet, Fort York Bathurst and Queens Quay.

511 BATHURST streetcars are rerouted east on King Street to loop through Charlotte Loop (via Spadina, Adelaide and Charlotte). Replacement buses operate out of Wolesley Loop via south on Bathurst to Fort York, following 509 HARBOURFRONT’s route into Exhibition Loop.

Also on this date

Certain late evening/night trips are added on the 503/303 KINGSTON ROAD and 506/306 CARLTON streetcars to ensure gaps between day and night service aren’t more than 20 minutes.

Spadina Overhead Work Ends

With the completion of overhead maintenance work, service is restored on the 510/310 SPADINA route. 310 SPADINA NIGHT service operates at 20 minute intervals, in line with other night streetcar services.

Watermain Work at Bathurst and Fleet Continues

The continuation of watermain and TTC trackwork construction at Bathurst Street and Fleet Street forces the temporary suspension of the 509 HARBOURFRONT streetcar. Service is increased on the 510A SPADINA (Union Station) branch to accommodate demand on Queen’s Quay east of Spadina Avenue.

509 HARBOURFRONT replacement buses operate from Queens Quay/Spadina loop via south on Lower Spadina (in the streetcar right-of-way), west on Queen’s Quay (in general traffic), north on Bathurst, west and south on Fort York Boulevard, west on Lake Shore Boulevard West, north on Strachan Avenue, west on Manitoba Drive and west on the streetcar right-of-way into Exhibition Loop. Buses return via the streetcar right of way to Strachan Avenue, then east on Fleet Street (in general traffic), north and east on Fort York, south on Bathurst, east on Queen’s Quay and north into Queen/Spadina Loop.

511 BATHURST streetcars continue their diversion to Charlotte Loop. Replacement buses continue to operate from Wolesley Loop to Fleet Street, following the 509 HARBOURFRONT replacement bus route into Exhibition Loop, with service provided out of Eglinton Garage instead of Wilson.

Also on this day

301 QUEEN NIGHT service is reduced to 20 minutes, in line with other night streetcar services, following the restoration of 310 SPADINA NIGHT streetcar service.

King and Church Reconstruction Begins

As work to rebuild the King/Church intersection launches, cars on 503/303 KINGSTON ROAD, 504/304 KING and 508 LAKE SHORE will divert via Spadina, Queen, York, Richmond/Adelade, and Queen in both directions. 503 KINGSTON ROAD cars are extended to Dufferin Gate Loop, removing streetcar service on Wellington Street. 303 KINGSTON ROAD NIGHT cars follow this diversion to Sunnyside Loop.

Service launches on a 304D KING NIGHT bus replacement operating from Wolesley Loop via Bathurst, King, Queen and Broadview to loop via west on Gerrard, snorth on. St. Matthew’s Road, east on Jack Layton Way and south on Broadview Avenue.

504 KING operates as a single route between Dundas West Station and Broadview station while a 504D replacement bus operates over the 304D night replacement bus route. A 504C replacement bus operates from Wolesley Loop via Bathurst, King and Cherry (in the general traffic lanes) to loop via west on Mill, north on Parliament, east on Front and north on Cherry Street (operating on the streetcar right-of-way to King Street) before returning via the reverse route.

These changes affect the run-in and run-out routings to Russell Carhouse for the 510 SPADINA and 511 BATHURST routes.

Queen Street East, Broadview Avenue to Davies Avenue

While scheduled for this day on the Service Plan, it was noted that the start of this project was delayed until mid-to-late October and, until then, 501 QUEEN streetcar and 503 KINGSTON ROAD replacement bus service will continue on its then-current route. 504B KING streetcars would continue to divert to Distillery Loop while the 504D KING replacement bus service would operate.

Once city watermain work began on Queen Street East between Broadview and Davies, 501/301 QUEEN streetcars were diverted via Dundas Street East between Broadview and Parliament. 503/303 KINGSTON ROAD replacement buses are reerouted via Queen Street East between Broadview and Parliament to maintain service on the ripped-up section of Queen. These buses continue to operate as far west as Dufferin Street (Dufferin Gate Loop) to ensure effective use of available bus operator workforce. 504A KING (Dundas West-Distillery) streetcars operate as normal, while 504B/304 KING streetcars are shortened to Distillery Loop while 504D KING and 301B QUEEN replacement buses operate between Broadview Station and the King/Parliament intersection.

This construction also affected the run-in and run-out of streetcars from Russell Carhouse, with cars forced to divert via Broadview, Dundas and Parliament.

The 504D KING/301B QUEEN NIGHT replacement bus operates from Berkley and King Street East via north on Berkeley, east on King, north on Parliament, east on Queen and north on Broadview to pull into Broadview Station using the streetcar tracks, buses return via the reverse loop, looping at the south end via Parliament, Front and Berkeley.

Also on this day:

Service is removed from the 305/505 DUNDAS stops at Munro Street (Stop IDs $2120 and 2121), as these stops are located too close to stops at Broadview Avenue and Dundas Street East, approximately 130 metres away.

504 KING and 508 LAKE SHORE streetcars were scheduled to end their diversion via Queen Street West between Roncesvalles Avenue and Shaw Street as track work at the King/Dufferin intersection ended. This, however, was delayed until early-to-mid November.

Phase 1 of Queen Street reconstruction, Broadview to Davies

To continue to accommodate construction, streetcar service on 503 KINGSTON ROAD continues to be replaced by buses. Service is shortened to operate between York Street and Bingham Loop, with service increased during peak hours and early evenings on weekends and during the afternoons on Saturdays. Buses continue to divert via Queen Street and Parliament Street to maintain service on 501 QUEEN as those streetcars divert around construction.

Launch of the 6-minute Streetcar Network

Service is improved on 505 DUNDAS during the rush hour and midday on weekdays, during Saturday mornings and during the daytime on Sunday to establish 6-minute (or better) service all day, every day. Ten minute service operates during the early morning and the evenings.

A similar service improvement is provided to 511 BATHURST, with six-minute service offered during the day, 7 days a week. The plan is for this initiative to expand to cover all streetcar routes on the TTC Network.

Also on this date:

509 HARBOURFRONT streetcars are reallocated to Roncesvalles Carhouse instead of Leslie Barns.
