The H-1 series cars aged faster than their older MLW series counterparts. In the late 1980s, while the MLWs were consigned to rush-hour duty, the H-1s continued to provide base service on the Bloor-Danforth subway. When the new T-1 series cars began arriving, the M-1 and the H-1 series cars were retired together. Except for a few which were retained for workcar service, the remainder of H-1 series cars were off TTC property by the year 2000.
This photo essay documents a particular car (5496) being put out to pasture early in 1998.
