Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West between Helen Street / Wigwoss Drive and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

As part of the rapidway project, contractors widened the Highway 7 bridge over Highway 400 to accommodate rapidway lanes and the centre-median multi-use path. The project is still under warranty, so, starting 8 p.m. Friday, July 9, crews return to the bridge to complete the remaining deficiency work and repairs. They are milling and then paving all traffic and rapidway lanes to even out the asphalt around the expansion joint at the east end of the bridge. This work takes place in stages until July 12 (5 a.m.)

YRT is detouring buses along this route, during the bridge work:

  • 77 Highway 7.

Passengers aboard buses along this route can expect delays, but buses continue to operate through the work zone:

  • Viva orange.

Starting 9 p.m. Friday, July 9, crews mill and pave the westbound traffic lanes through the work zone. The work zone restricts westbound traffic to just one lane, flowing along the rapidway.

Early Saturday, July 10, crews mill and pave the eastbound lanes through the work zone. The work zone restricts eastbound traffic to just one lane, flowing along the rapidway. During this time, the work zone also temporarily blocks the on-ramp to northbound Highway 400.

During the next stage, crews mill and pave the westbound rapidway lane and then the eastbound rapidway lane. The work zones restrict traffic to just one lane in both directions, flowing along the curb lanes.

During the final stage, early Sunday, July 11, crews mill and pave the westbound curb lane through the work area, and then the eastbound curb lane. The work zones restrict traffic to just one lane in each direction. While crews work in the eastbound lanes, the work zone also temporarily blocks the on-ramp to northbound Highway 400**. Crews also paint lines through the work zones early Sunday morning.

“Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers and traffic-control staff will be on-site to help direct traffic, as necessary.

Expect dust and construction-related noise from equipment and trucks.
